It’s a rare occasion when I will condone the use of shuffle. It turns out, I’m a bit of music snob. I’m certainly not one of those people who knows each and every artist and album out there. No, I could never be that serious. However, I’m someone who either listens to an album in its entirety, or who makes a pretty concerted effort to create the perfect playlist — taking into careful consideration which tracks go in what order, and who is going to be listening (even if it’s just me). Think High Fidelity:

"The making of a great compilation tape … is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules."

That being said, I’ve collected an awful lot of music in my time and it’s easy to forget the songs that once were favourites. So hitting shuffle on the odd occasion can reap delicious rewards. This song being one of them. After stumbling across it on the weekend just gone, I’ve had it playing on repeat.

Dead Souls - Joy Division
This song is perfect for the current ebb and flow of the times.
