A staggering 46 per cent of Australians struggle with functional literacy. Tasks like reading newspapers, following a recipe, making sense of timetables or understanding instructions on a medicine bottle can be arduous or impossible.

After researching the lives of those who overcame illiteracy, I wrote three stories that played on radio — the best kind of medium for our audience.
